First Grant Awards – 2013

In keeping with their congregational Focus on the compassionate care of creation, the Franciscan Sisters of Mary awarded one-time grants to five environmental organizations located in the St. Louis region. These organizations were selected not only for their effectiveness, but because their missions closely align with FSM’s values of ecological stewardship, community engagement, and long-term sustainability.

Seed St. Louis (formerly Gateway Greening)

Seed St. Louis fosters urban agriculture, education, and neighborhood vitality through the creation and support of community gardens, school gardens, and urban farms. Its work enhances food access and civic engagement across St. Louis neighborhoods, creating healthier environments and stronger communities.

Forest ReLeaf of Missouri

Forest Releaf of Missouri provides free trees for public and nonprofit plantings throughout Missouri and adjacent regions, while promoting environmental education and volunteerism. Their community-centered approach to reforestation advances ecological health, climate resilience, and stewardship of natural resources.

Missouri Coalition for the Environment

Missouri Coalition for the Environment safeguards Missouri’s air, water, and land through legal advocacy, public education, and grassroots organizing. Its work centers on environmental justice and community empowerment, especially for populations most impacted by pollution and environmental degradation.

Springs (formerly Rockhaven) Ecozoic Center

Springs Ecozoic Center is a retreat and ecological education center rooted in the spirituality of the Earth. It provides space for contemplation and study of the universe story, ecological sustainability, and the interconnectedness of all life. Through programs and hospitality, it fosters deep spiritual and ecological awareness.

Earthday 365 (formerly St. Louis Earth Day)

Earthday 365 nurtures environmental responsibility and sustainable living through public education and events, including the region’s largest Earth Day Festival. The organization supports local businesses, reduces waste, and empowers individuals to make ecologically responsible choices. Together, these partners reflect FSM’s deep commitment to healing the Earth and building a more just, sustainable world for future generations.
